NOT LONG AFTER FULL DARKNESS, Jimbo settled down. He stopped pacing around camp and curled up at the bottom of Zachâs buffalo robe just as he usually did. Zach knew something had happened, but he had no idea what that something was.
Zach watched the stars overhead. The air was crystal clear, the stars looked close enough to touch. He wondered what Sun Flower and Shining Star were doing. Just then, a shooting star streaked across the sky and he wondered if his wives had seen it too. He thought about their belief that a shooting star was a warrior following the great white trail in the sky to the land and life that lay beyond this world.
Though Zach didnât really believe in that or many of the other superstitions of his wives' people, he didnât discount them either. At the very least he felt it was a comforting story, a way their loved ones continue their journey past this mortal life.
Jimbo, with another sudden move, raised his head and this time he was staring straight south. Zach whispered, âWhat is it Jimbo, what is out there?â A whine escaped the big dog's throat and without any warning he was on his paws and running south. Within three silent bounds he was out of sight in the darkness.
Running Wolf was standing the first guard for the night. He saw the great medicine dog leave. Although the fire had died down, there was still enough light to see Jimbo leave and Zach with his head up watching him.
He walked over to his partner wondering where Zach had sent the big dog, and asked, âYou think something is out there Grizzly Killer, you send Jimbo to have a look?â All the others were sitting up, wondering what was happening. Zach shook his head and said, âWasnât me, Jimbo just up and took off by himself. He raised his head like he had heard something again, then just took off heading south.â
Although tired, none of them could lay back down and sleep. They all believed Jimbo had heard something and they built up the fire, plumped up their sleeping robes to look like they were sleeping and each disappeared into the darkness. They would wait, out of sight for what Jimbo had heard to come in, or the big dog returned to let them know it was clear.
They kept the fire burning throughout the night, while staying back in the shadows away from the flames and heat they all spent a long, miserably cold night. As the first hint of dawn started to spread along the eastern horizon, they all came to the fire for its warmth.
Jimbo had not returned. There had been no sign the great medicine dog was near. Zach did not know where he had gone, but somehow he knew the dog was many miles from them. Ely looked up the steep ridge to the south. He turned to Zach and asked, âWhere you figure that there dog a yours took off to, Grizzly Killer?â Everyone was watching Zach, either expecting an answer or hoping for one.
